Racing in Belgium
Belgium is the only country in Europe where one may enter an amateur race without being on a team. To race in Belgium, you must have a UCI international racing license.
Entering an amateur-race will cost you about 4 euro (about 3 US dollars). Each race has change rooms. These rooms often have showers. In the months May, June, July and August you can race about every day within a distance of 50km of Oostende.
‘Kermesse’
These amateur races are called “Kermesses” are about 120 km long. Those race you enter as individual not as a team.
‘Interclub or UCI-races’
The UCI-races 1.12, 1.7 and 1.6 are called interclubs and are between 150 and 180km long. Those are entered as a team, also the pro-am-races 1.5 are entered as a team.
Racing in Belgium is very hard and difficult, because of the distance, speed (average between 42 and 45) and weather (wind, cold, rain, hail) and road conditions (cobbles and narrow roads).
Races are very organized (especially interclubs – those
are really like the pro-races with big car-caravans,
motorized police and motorized-marshals). The race organisation and the federations provide insurances for accidents during the races. In case of a crash, there is always an ambulance and EMT crew on site of all the races. For Interclubs there are always doctors following the race.
